Flagler County has appointed the Children’s Home Society of Florida to create a local program to “promote the safety of clients at exchanges in cases of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and stalking while allowing the non-resident parent or guardian parenting time.”

County residents currently have to drive to Volusia County for supervised exchanges, and some circumvent that system and meet unofficially at the flagpole outside the Government Services Building.

The project is funded by a 2011 $400,000 grant from the Federal Office of Violence Against Women.

About $100,000 of that money has already been spent, and the Children’s Home Society will administer up to $260,000 of the remaining money.

The appointment was part of the consent agenda for the County Commission’s regular June 16 meeting.

Bridge work continues on County Road 305

Flagler County will begin work on the last — and longest — bridge on County Road 305, as well as on three box culverts, concrete structures that act as miniature bridges.

Road closures will begin June 23, County Administrator Craig Coffey said at the meeting.

The bridge, which spans Middle Haw Creek, will be the last of seven C.R. 305 bridges the county has rehabilitated since 2007. Work on the bridge will take about six months.

Work on each box culvert will take about 45 days. There will be a detour for the bridge, and also local detours for each of the box culverts.

Renovations proceeding at Bull Creek and Princess Place

In the west of the county, renovations are proceeding at the Bull Creek Fish Camp, where Woody’s Bar-B-Q owners Joe Rizzo and Matt Crews, and former local Wendy’s manager Chris Zwirn have taken over formerly-vacant restaurant.

It opened June 1, and there will soon be a ribbon cutting, Coffey said. An old bait shop building on the property is being demolished — the bait shop is now inside the restaurant building — and an additional recreational vehicle site is being added t the campground in its place.

Work is also proceeding on the damaged barn roof at Princess Place Preserve, Coffey said, and staff will update the County Commission at its July 7 budget meeting.
