A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy and Fire Station 11 personnel came to the rescue June 11 when people in Wadsworth Park called to report a raccoon with a plastic peanut butter jar stuck on its head.
“The actions of Deputy Williams and all other rescue personnel saved this raccoon from certain death,” Sheriff James L. Manfre said in a news release. “Residents should not feed wild animals and should use caution when encountering them.”
Agricultural and Ranch Deputy Steve Williams and local emergency services personnel and animal control found the critter high in a tree, where the raccoon — referred to as “Jiffy” in the news release — scurried and hopped from branch to branch as rescuers tried to capture it.
A fire truck arrived, and the rescuers decided to use a jet of water from the hose to knock the raccoon out of the tree and onto a tarp held by rescuers waiting below.
But the raccoon, after falling safely from the tree onto the tarp, bounded off in a jiffy before rescuers could grab it, according to the news release.
Finally they caught it, pulled off the jar, and let it go.
