The Community Problem Solver Team from Flagler Palm Coast High School returned home last week as Grand Champions from the Future Problem Solving International Competition held at Iowa State University.
The team Project Self Confidence won the Grand Championship in the senior division.
Team members are Molly Bell, Agata Bereznicka, William DeAugustino, Monica Dorman, Barrett Manfre, Nathan Monsanto, Tara Norberg, Autumn Sanson, Madison Scarcella, Rachel Secunda and Anna Skudarnova. Team coaches are Caitlin Hutsell and Diane Tomko.
FPC also had winners in Individual Community Problem Solving competitions: Daniel Thomas and Kerry Norberg.
Several students also competed in the Future Problem Solving scenario writing portion of the competition. They were at the competition representing the state of Florida as state champions.
Secunda competed in the Global Issues Problem Solving Individual Competition and Scarcella, DeAugustino and Kerry Norberg competed in the Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Competition.
Palm Coast teacher attend C- SPAN 2014 Educators’ Conference
Leo Booth, social studies teachers at Buddy Taylor Middle School, respectively are two of 32 educators from across the nation selected to attend C-SPAN Classroom’s 2014 Educators’ Conference to be held in Washington, D.C., Monday, July 7, and Tuesday, July 8.
The conference helps educators discover how to integrate C-SPAN’s programs and C-SPAN Classroom’s free web-based primary source materials into classroom activities to create engaging learning experiences for students. The conference brings together middle school teachers who specialize in social studies and/or technology. Booth and Sheridan competed with applicants from across the country to secure a place at the conference. C-SPAN provides the roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations and meals for all selected attendees.
7 host families needed
Step in Florida is looking for seven host families to provide homes to Spanish students for 28 days in July. Host families provide meals, a bed and transportation two days a week. All students speak English and come with their own spending money and medical insurance.

New Beginnings Family Literacy Program receives grant
New Beginnings Family Literacy Program has received a grant from the Florida Literacy Coalition and Florida Blue for the fourth year in a row.
The Health Literacy Grant and curriculum is supplied by the Florida Literacy Coalition. The New Beginnings project based learning activity is to plant, maintain, and harvest box gardens that are located directly outside the classroom doors.
The program has also collaborated with the Flagler County Extension Service and have the Family Nutrition Assistant, Deborah Hough scheduled to present many topics to our families in regards to nutrition.

The Knights of Columbus Council 10514 donated $975, the proceeds of its annual Tootsie Roll Drive, to Whispering Meadows Ranch May 31.
Ryan M. Crosby, son of Bruce and Sue Crosby of Westchester Lane in Palm Coast, was promoted June 3 to the rank of Major in the United States Army. Crosby, a combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, was promoted in a small ceremony at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, by his wife of ten years, U.S. Army Maj. Cassandra S. Crosby.
Anthony Joseph Marotta, of Palm Coast, has been recognized on the dean's list at Norwich University for the spring 2014 semester.
