On Feb. 25, I was in my English 1 class writing an essay, and I could not seem to focus. My teacher allowed me to go outside to our courtyard and complete the essay.

As I was sitting there, I kept getting distracted by the janitors crossing back and forth from the school. I tried my best to avoid them and focus on my essay, until I saw a very petite janitor in front of me with a bucket and a cloth. My eyes couldn’t help but to look over there and see what she was up to. As I did so, I saw this woman start scrubbing with all her might the poles in our courtyard.

As I took a closer look, I noticed that she was trying to scrub off the profanity left by students during the day. I thought how this woman most likely spends most of her time and effort into scrubbing off things left by these illiterate students. My mind started to wonder: If all these janitors were not here, schools would look like a complete wreck.

School janitors nowadays do not get the attention they justify. Most people do not understand the importance of school janitors, and many students are oblivious to the work that they put them through. School janitors are as important to the school as the teachers are. This awareness needs to be acknowledged and it is time that they get the recognition they deserve.
