Flagler Schools is rolling out districtwide voluntary pre-kindergarten so parents who would like their child to attend VPK can bring them to their home-zoned school.

The program, available to any child who is 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, provides 540 free instruction hours.

The classes will follow the Flagler County School Board calendar, but session will be three hours long, and parents can choose a morning or afternoon session.

“Wrap around” care before and after VPK classes will be available for a fee. The proposed fee is $60 per week but might change. Reduced fee options would be available for families with economic hardships.

The wrap-around time will include additional instruction. A pilot program offered at Bunnell Elementary would include full days of instruction on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and offer wrap-around care on Monday and Tuesday.

The district is also currently signing up children for summer VPK. Parents with children who will attend kindergarten in the coming school year but have not already attended a VPK program can register their children for the 300-hour summer program by calling 437-7584. The classes will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 9 to Aug. 8.

The VPK slots will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Belle Terre Elementary can accept 66 students, Bunnell Elementary 88, Old Kings Elementary 44, Rymfire 88 and Wadsworth Elementary 88.

Science-whiz students recognized

In other business Tuesday, the Flagler County School Board recognized students from Wadsworth Elementary School and Matanzas High School who represented the county at regional and state Science Olympiad competitions.

Wadsworth’s STEM team placed first at the Science Olympiad Competition at Matanzas High School, and are the first sixth-grade team in the county to go to state competition.

Matanzas High School’s Science Olympiad Team placed third overall in state regionals Feb. 1, and also competed at the state competition at University of Central Florida Orlando on March 15.

Neither team won the overall event, but the sixth-grade Wadsworth team took seventh place out of 42 middle schools for the Robo Cross robotics event, and Matanzas took ninth place out of 42 high schools for the Compound Machines event.
