Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Flagler Beach Police officers collected more than 470 pounds of unwanted medications during a drug take-back event April 26, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

“This program offers the most effective way to properly dispose of medication,” Sheriff James L. Manfre said inthe news release. “Not only is it safer for the environment, but it gets the drugs out of our homes and away from our children.”

About 236 residents discarded medications at the event, which was organized by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Residents also donated 20 cell phones that will be converted to free 9-1-1 phones for crime victims, according to the news release.
