The following is an adapted news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Almost 100 runners kicked up their heels April 26 for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics.

Through the run, donations and other fundraising efforts like T-shirt sales and a “Tip-A-Cop” event at the Bob Evans Restaurant, members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office raised $2,000 for the Special Olympics.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest annual public relations and fund-raising event for Special Olympics Florida and law enforcement agencies, and the “Flame of Hope” has traversed Florida in an intrastate relay of simultaneous routes throughout the state for 31 years, covering thousands of miles.

Law enforcement officers carry the torch throughout the state to the opening ceremonies of Special Olympics Florida’s State Summer Games, held at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports May 16-17.

Sheriff James L. Manfre helped with bicycle patrol throughout the event April 26, as did FCSO traffic units who followed along to ensure runners’ safety.

Members of the Whispering Meadows Horse Ranch, Pink Heels Organization (the pink fire truck), the magician Bruce Bryant, the Flagler Falcon Fire Cheer Squad, city of Palm Coast volunteer firefighters and McGruff the Crime Dog from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office also helped make the event a success.
