In order for her to be eligible to participate in District VI events, she had to first qualify at the Flagler County 4-H event by winning a blue ribbon there. District VI events include 6 counties: Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, and St. Johns.
Betsy Tier named Haven Hospice Flagler Volunteer of the Year
Betsy Tier was the recipient of the Haven Hospice Volunteer of the Year Award for the Flagler County service area during the volunteer appreciation luncheon and awards event, at Vince Carter’s last month.
Volunteers are a vital member of the Hospice Care Team. They provide companionship, support and assistance to patients residing at home, in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and any of Haven’s five, free-standing care centers. They also reach out to grieving families, help staff the Attic Resale stores and serve on special event committees.
Florida Hospital Flagler honors volunteers
In honor of National Healthcare Volunteer Week, the five Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties recognized the volunteers who donate their time and talents to the hospitals.
“This special week presents an opportunity to celebrate the everyday people who accomplish extraordinary things through service,” said Daryl Tol, Florida Hospital Volusia/Flagler CEO. “These community members are essential to the healthcare team as they give of their time freely and ask for nothing in return. We are so blessed to have such an incredible group of volunteers; they are a precious and important part of our team.”
Florida Hospital Flagler hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon at Halifax Plantation for more than 150 volunteers. This year’s celebration was exceptionally special as the volunteers had just surpassed providing 1.5 million hours of service.
Florida Hospital Flagler currently has nearly 300 active volunteers assisting in 25 departments throughout the hospital and honored the volunteers for reaching 1.5 million hours of donated time. Since 2005, the volunteers have provided nearly 26,000 free blood pressure checks at the hospital and cared for nearly 6,000 guests in the Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Library since it opened in 2010.
Financially, this organization has donated more than $1 million to the hospital since 1983. For more information about volunteer opportunities at Florida Hospital Flagler, call 586-4234.
Members of the Citizens Observer Patrol recognized
Sheriff James L. Manfre recognized 52 members of the Citizens Observer Patrol (C.O.P.) April 28, for their dedicated service to the community and to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
The "Mission" of the C.O.P. organization is to make the neighborhoods of Flagler County as safe and secure as possible. The C.O.P.’s report all suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Office and aid deputies in traffic control, parades, funeral escorts and other special details.
At the Palm Coast substation, the C.O.P.’s duties consist of fingerprinting, passing out information and gun licensing permits, filling requests for vacation house watches and other services provided to the community.
Major Sonia Byrne has been a C.O.P. volunteer since 2003. Over the past ten years, Byrne has donated over 23, 000 hours of her time. All other volunteers were commended for giving 200 or more hours of their time just this past year.
“The 52 men and women who were recognized today have collectively donated over 27,000 hours of their time just this past year. They are a valuable asset to our community,” said Sheriff James L. Manfre.
Since 2005, the C.O.P’s have worked approximately 260,000 hours, saving the county about $4,806,000.
