It was just a spring game, but Flagler Palm Coast appeared to be in mid-season form Friday when it routed Bartram Trail High School 41-14, thanks in large part to a long catch and run by rising senior wide receiver Jimmie Robinson.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-7 lead, scoring on a fumble return in the opening seconds of the game from cornerback Joshua Belle and a rushing touchdown by sophomore running back Que’shuan Byrd.
Set up with a 1st-and-15 during the first quarter, quarterback Dalton Thomas hit Robinson in stride, and the talented wide receiver did the rest. Robinson wove in and out of the Bears defense and before breaking into the open field for a 68-yard touchdown.
"I was just hustling, and kept moving my feet side to side,” said Robinson of the scoring play. “I got help from the guys in front of me and I made it", said Robinson about his strong run.
Bulldogs coach Caesar Campana cited Robinson’s experience in the offense.
"He's incredible," Campana said. "Jimmie's been at this forever now, he's got awareness and all we got to work on is getting him in shape."
Although FPC showed promise across the board Friday, Campana still believes there's room for improvement.
"We got to work on our conditioning and our younger guys getting better," he said. "Also depth — we have to make sure we can make it as a team throughout those 10 games."
Robinson wasn’t the only Bulldog to put together a big night. Byrd had a total of three touchdowns, and kicker Chase Hydrick went a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts.
"We have a good starting 22 on our team, offense and defense," said Campana. "I'm excited for Dalton Thomas, we haven't had a quarterback like him in a long time. He makes things just so difficult for defensive ends."
Thomas finished with four touchdown passes on the night.
