The water is used for irrigation and fire suppression.

The City Commission recently approved seeking bids for the South Peninsula Reclaimed Water Main Extension Project. The beachside, a barrier island, is sometimes referred to as the “peninsula.” The bid number is 2015-11.

The City has received several requests for reuse service from residents and property owners on the South Peninsula, according to city documents. It is estimated that Hillside Cemetery will use about 35,000 gallons per day. Water for irrigation will be available along Seton Trail and parts of South Halifax Drive and Magnolia Drive.

Three years ago, the city built a second waste water plant, increasing the storage capacity from three to eight million gallons. The water is used for irrigation, as well as fire suppression in areas on the North Peninsula, including Oceanside Country Club. In the western area of the city, Tomoka Oaks Golf and Country Club, and the neighborhoods of Breakaway Trails and Hunter’s Ridge have reclaimed water service.

The reuse of waste water reduces the amount that is released into the river. According to Dave Ponitz, utilities manager, the city has reduced the amount of nitrogen released into waterways by 43% and phosphorous by 49%.

Quentin L. Hampton and Associates Inc. designed the project and has estimated the cost to be $357,641.00.
