Palm Coast’s City Council will see a major change at its next meeting, with Steven Nobile replacing incumbent Councilman Bill Lewis and Heidi Shipley replacing David Ferguson, who did not run for re-election.
Nobile beat Lewis in the tightest local race of the election, winning with 50.63% of the vote to Lewis’ 49.37% as the last of Flagler County’s 23 precincts reported in Tuesday night. The difference between the two was a mere 308 votes.
“It was close. It was an exciting night, and I’m glad to be elected to the City Council,” Nobile said. “I look forward to working with the rest of the council members to help Palm Coast improve.”
Shipley, a newcomer on the political scene, had a more comfortable lead over Flagler County Ronald Reagan Republican Assemblies-backed competitor Anne-Marie Shaffer. Shipley beat Shaffer with 53.2% of the vote to Shaffer’s 46.8%.
On her campaign’s Facebook page, Shipley thanked voters and campaign volunteers.
“It was a great blend of people from Palm Coast and Flagler County that became my strength,” she wrote. “I hope to keep this positive energy going and continue to keep Palm Coast the place we love to call home.”
But the County Commission races weren’t even close. Incumbents led by wide margins from the beginning and had maintained them by the time all of the precincts had been tallied.
In District 4, incumbent Republican Nate McLaughlin beat independent challenger Denise Calderwood by 60.27% to Calderwood’s 39.73%, a difference of 7,083 votes.
“We worked very hard for the people of Flagler County, and they deserve a hard-working commissioner,” McLaughlin said. “And we’re going to continue to do what we can to help improve the economy, to maintain our great quality of life here and to maintain the great assets in parks and recreation that we have here.”
In District 2, incumbent Frank Meeker, a Republican, beat independent candidate Howard Holley by 58.6% to Holley’s 41.4%.
In statewide races, Republican incumbents defeated their challengers. Within Flagler County, incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Scott beat Democrat Charlie Crist 52.82% to 42.25%, and Libertarian candidate Adrian Wylie got 3.67% of the vote.
Statewide, the margin between Scott and Crist was narrower: as of 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, Scott led Crist 48.38% to 46.82%, and Wylie had 3.76% of the vote.
Statewide, Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi won reelection by confortable margins, as did Republican Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Republican Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam.
Republican District 6 Congressman Ron DeSantis was beating challenger David Cox 62.62% to 37.38% as of 10:20 p.m.Tuesday, and Republican State Senator John Thrasher was leading Democrat Kathy Trued by 58.24% to 36.61%.
Of three proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot, only one — Amendment 1, which dedicates funds to restore conservation and recreation land — got the 60% minimum amendments need to pass. Amendment 1 had 74.88% of the statewide vote as of 10:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Amendment 2, which would have allowed for the use of medical marijuana for certain conditions, had about 58% of the vote as of 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, and Amendment 3, requiring the governor to fill certain judicial vacancies under certain conditions, had less than 50%.
Preliminary election results will be posted in the chart below below on election night as they are released from the Flagler County Supervisor of Elections Office and the Florida Division of Elections.
