Flaglerlicious, a relay running team, completed a three-peat, placing first in the Oceans 50 relay race for the third straight year, although they’ve continued to lose teammates.

In the first year, Flaglerlicious won with six runners. The following year, one of the runners decided not to compete with them, leaving them with five. This year another didn’t run, but the team maintained its top place in the women’s division.

Overall, Flaglerlicious placed sixth of the 39 teams with a time of 6:37:40. Its members are Karen Zawislak, Samantha English, Tess Wamhoff and Jessie Bech Magee.

“There were a lot more teams this year than it has been in the past, so we were very happy to accomplish our goal,” English added. She’s currently training for a 50K ultra-marathon.

Her teammate, Jessie Bech Magee, had just come home from running in the New York Marathon with her husband on Sunday, Nov. 2.

“It was tough, but I managed to pull it out,” Magee said. In less than a week, she ran over 40 miles in two different states.

“I started running to get back in shape, after having my kids,” she added. “Now I run for the competition; I get a rush during the races. It’s a good stress reliever. It’s just fun.”

With most of the runners expecting to compete in future marathons, they are already getting back on the track to prepare.

“We get up at 5 a.m. and run every morning,” Zawislak said. “This week we’ll have a 19-mile training run.”

After their race, the women were able to celebrate their accomplished goal at the Flagler Winery, the finish line, where they were able to rest and chat with other runners.

“It’s nice that you get to catch up with all the other local runners that you don’t get to see until it’s over,” English said. “Some teams started as early as 5 a.m., and some started as late as nine, so it’s just nice to stick around and congratulate everyone.”
