The 15th-annual Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic presented by Nautica will be celebrating 15 years in Flagler Beach Nov. 15-16.

The weekend celebration honors the life of Flagler Beach’s local surf brethren, Tommy Tant, who died in 1998 from an aortic aneurysm. The Southeast surf community unites to enjoy surfing, music, food, movies, and art to raise money for scholarships, the local food bank and The Marfan Foundation. To date the event has donated over $120,000.

The Tommy Tant hosts over 300 surfers who compete in three pro divisions and 12 amateur divisions. All skill levels are welcome. Thousands of spectators will stand shoulder to shoulder on the boardwalk and cheer their favorite surfers. Bright House Networks is the purse sponsor for the Men’s Pro. High Tides at Snack Jack and Highjackers restaurants present both the Jr. Pro and Women’s Pro divisions. All division winners will receive a one-year membership to surfline.com. Surf competition begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

New to the event this year, the Tommy Tant will host a food festival and concert presented by Nautica during the surf contest on 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. This culinary experience features local restaurants combined with live music at noon by former lead singer of Storyside: B, Lucio Rubino and his band, The Mix. A $10 ticket allows a choice from three restaurants and a $5 ticket from one. Tickets are available at the event.

The all-day out-of-the-water festivities include live art with Patrick Maxcy, a raffle and sponsor booths.

A free movie in Veterans Park 7 p.m. Saturday night will be presented by the Flagler Film Festival. The movie, “Beyond Sight,” is an inspiring story of Brazilian surfer Derek Rabelo, who, despite being born blind, pursues his dream to surf Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Bring lawn chairs and blanket.

The kickoff event will take place 6:30 p.m. Friday, at Woody’s Bar-B-Q. There will be a silent auction including an international travel package to Nicargua, a Hammock Beach Resort golf package, a Channel Island surfboard, jewelry, art, massage certificates, custom bikes and numerous other items.

Event proceeds support the Tommy Tant Memorial Scholarship, the Flagler Food Bank and The Marfan Foundation. The event raises awareness for Marfan syndrome and related disorders, many of which cause aortic aneurysms.
