After playing just two minutes, the Matanzas Lady Pirates found themselves down a goal against the Seabreeze Sandcrabs on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Matanzas High School.
Lady Pirates relinquished another goal in the 16th minute, and then they began to storm back.
Leanna Ballschmieder put Matanzas on the board in the 20th minute, Miracle Porter scored on a penalty kick in the 28th and Kamila Perez put the Pirates up 3-2 with a goal in the 30th minute.
“I was proud of the girls,” coach Tony Benvenuto said. “We were down 2-0, and they came back and took the lead.”
Seabreeze began the second half like the first, scoring and tying the game in the first five minutes, but Porter broke from the Sandcrabs’ defense and put the ball in the net for the go-ahead score in the 59th minute to put the Pirates up 4-3 for good.
“I think the girls came in overconfident,” coach Tony Benvenuto said.
Benvenuto believes that his team will continue to get better once more key players recover from injuries and the defense gets better as a group.
