The following is an adapted news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office:
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has released its 2014 Semi-Annual Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) crime statistics covering the period from January through June for Part 1 crimes. Part 1 crimes are considered to be the most serious crimes, and include murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
Countywide, reported crime is down 10.9% from the same reporting period in 2013. Crime reported to the Sheriff’s Office in the unincorporated areas of the county saw a drop of 5.9%. The UCR also contains data collected from the Bunnell and Flagler Beach police departments. The full report can be viewed HERE.
Crime statistics tend to fluctuate from one reporting period to the next. Fluctuations are often attributable to spikes in the number of burglaries or thefts from motor vehicles that were either unlocked or had valuables left in plain view. Crimes of this type are crimes of opportunity that are often committed by juveniles and are preventable by simply removing valuable property from a vehicle and locking the car when it is left unattended.
“We get calls almost on a daily basis from people reporting that there unlocked car has been broken into overnight and that property has been stolen. What has been most alarming is the increase we are seeing in the number of loaded firearms that are being stolen from under a car seat, center console or a glove box in an unlocked car,” Sheriff James L. Manfre said. “It concerns me to think of what may happen if a young teen gets his hands on a loaded firearm.”
The Sheriff's Office encourages people to actively report suspicious and/or criminal activity immediately by calling 9-1-1. Non-emergency calls should be made to the Sheriff's Office Communication Center by calling (386) 313-4911.
