Playing in their second game in just five days, the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs defeated the Palatka Panthers 27-18 Friday, Oct. 10, at FPC High School.
Jimmie Robinson recovered the opening kickoff on Palatka’s 10-yard line, when a Panther failed to pick up the ball. After a penalty, Dalton Thomas found Marcel Williams for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Palatka tied the game with a 3-yard touchdown, and they, too, missed the extra point.
The Bulldogs drove back down the field, and the area’s top rusher, Que’Shaun Byrd, finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Byrd had another big rushing night, going for over 100 yards. Palatka responded with a 44-yard score on a designed quarterback run to make the score 13-12 FPC.
The Bulldogs found the end zone again on a Robinson 4-yard run. Palatka scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 remaining in the first half. On the ensuing play, Williams scored on a 97-yard kick return to put the Bulldogs up for good 27-18.
"I felt like I needed to step up when we were lacking in some areas," Williams said.
After a big Palatka gain in the third quarter, Robinson intercepted a pass to halt Palatka’s momentum.
Tylee Austin recorded a sack, and Josh Huggins finished with two sacks on the night.
“This win was part of our goals for the rest of the year,” coach Caesar Campana said. “We made a lot of mistakes tonight, but our kids played tough tonight. We’re not big, but we’ll knock you down.”
FPC will play the First Coast Buccaneers Friday, Oct. 17, in Jacksonville.
