Florida Hospital Flagler took what would have been, in the past, unusual precautions to guard against Ebola when a patient showed up vomiting blood and complaining of adbdominal pain Oct. 15.
The hospital, concerned about the possibility of the disease, followed CDC guidelines, Florida Hospital Flagler Spokeswoman Lindsay Rew said.
Flagler County Health Department Director Patrick Johnson also visited the home of the patient's family members to ask them about the patient's and family members' travel history. He concluded there was no threat of Ebola from the case.
Florida Hospital Volusia/Flagler Spokeswoman Lindsay Rew released the following written statement about the incident:
"On Oct. 15, Emergency Medical Services brought a patient from a local nursing home to Florida Hospital Flagler. The patient presented with hematemesis, or vomiting blood, and abdominal pain, which are both symptoms of Ebola. In addition, there was an alleged concern about the travel history of a family member. In precaution, the Flagler County Health Department was alerted. The director of the Flagler County Health Department, Patrick Johnson, personally visited the next of kin’s home with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Department to interview the family. Through this interaction, he learned that there was no positive travel history. He concluded that there was no threat of Ebola.
We took all best practice precautions and are treating the patient per appropriate standard of care. We will continue to follow CDC guidelines and collaborate with the Health Department."
