Over 15 men competed in the “Men that cook…with a purpose” cook-off and charity event for the African American girls’ mentoring program on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Hammock Community Center.
All the guests who attended were invited to try all the dishes, and they were requested to tip the chef whom they thought had the best dish. Retired military serviceman, Carl Jones, received the most tips for his Okinawan-style fried chicken curry.
“I’m just thankful for what this means to the mentoring program,” Jones said. “I’ve been mentoring for over 20 years, so it’s always good to give back to the kids.”
Among the chefs, Flagler schools superintendent Jacob Oliva and County Commissioner, Frank Meeker, also participated in the event.
“This weekend we had two great events for the boys and girls programs,” Oliva said. “The proceeds from our charity events help buy students’ supplies, pay for field trips that students’ may not have the opportunity to ever visit, and they also go toward scholarships. Anytime we can provide a mentor for one of our students, they do better in school. I’ve seen it firsthand.”
Other winners include Travis Lee, who won best appetizer, Kevin James for best dessert and Chris Prior for best side dish.
Celebrity chef and author Chad Thilborger was one of the judges of the cook-off, and he also provided a cooking demonstration with his award-winning “Whole heap of bread pudding.”
“I’ve worked for nonprofits for 22 years, so I get what they go through and the struggles they go through,” Thilborger said. “Dr. Pam (Jackson) asked me to do this last year, and I told her that I would do whatever she needed. I love when cooking brings people together in the spirit of community more than in the spirit of competition, and that’s what today was all about.”
