Palm Coast city councilmen and staff grabbed shovels and threw dirt in the city’s official groundbreaking ceremony for its new City Hall Oct. 29.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts said in a speech at the ceremony. “The handsome, yet modest building will be one-stop shopping for everything city-related,” he added.
The building will be two stories and 32,000 square feet, and the City Council approved a maximum price of $6,552,630 for its construction.
Netts called the groundbreaking “a truly epic moment in Palm Coast’s history.”
“Today, we take the next step in our future,” he said.
The event was attended by county commissioners and officials, fire rescue and Sheriff’s Office staff and other residents, many of whom signed the borders of an enlarged rendering of the building.
The city bottled dirt from the groundbreaking for residents to take home as keepsakes.
Residents who attended the ceremony said they felt it was time for the city to have a permanent home.
Palm Coast resident George Mayo, 63, said the city needed the new space. “I think it’s a step forward for the city of Palm Coast,” he said.
Resident Dwayne Dodd, 67, agreed. “I think we need something a little more professional than what we have,” he said. "And it’s good for the morale of the employees.”
