Two players scored a 700 series. One player rolled eight straight strikes to chase a perfect score. One team scored over 800 points in three straight rounds. Matanzas and Seabreeze turned out one of the best games this season, as the Pirates edged the Sandcrabs.

Junior Erik Irwin began the match, seeking a perfect game. With every strike, the crowd around him grew. But, after eight straight strikes, Irwin’s perfect game was derailed, when he only knocked down seven pins.

“I felt pretty good,” Irwin said. “The closer I got to the perfect game, the more the pressure got to me.”

His teammate Christian Sikes recorded a game high 719, scoring over 200 or better in each round.

Coach Frank Novak, who returned to coach the Pirates after retiring in 2012, was pleased with the performance of his team. “I feel ecstatic,” he said. “This is the best game that I have ever seen. I made good substitutions, and they all panned out for us."

Both teams had at least three players shoot over a 200 in a single round. Seabreeze’s Josh Fuller, the leading bowler in Volusia and Flagler County, scored a 718, one point shy of Sikes’ game total. Coach Paul Shuler, in a loss, walked away from the match with much to be proud of.

“Matanzas is a really good team,” Shuler said. "We didn’t play a bad game; they were just better."
