Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park” tells the story of newlyweds living in a tiny fifth-floor apartment in Greenwich Village. Set in the ‘60s, the unlikely couple faces problems such as a leaky skylights, nosy neighbors, interfering in-laws, and of-course, love.
John Pope will direct the Flagler Playhouse’s rendition of the Simon’s longest-running hit which opens Friday, Oct. 3.
“The most exciting part about it for me is that I don’t think Simon has ever written a bad play, and he really catches the essence of life,” Pope said while sitting in the house of the theater watching the finishing touches being made to the set. “He always writes about people in love and finds situations that are humorous.”
Pope said one aspect of the show he is proud of is how they are staying true to the flavor of the time, really capturing the essence of the 1960s — everything from the clothes to the set. While that can be challenging, the majority of the show challenges have come from the renovations being done on the building’s exterior. When rehearsals began for the show, there was no air conditioning in the building. Now, the renovations, which included added bathrooms in the front of the theater just off the lobby and building a scene shop and storage to the west of the building, have been complete, and the Flagler Playhouse is ready to open the doors for their 2014-15 season.
