DID YOU KNOW? Palm Coast will soon become home to one of Florida’s Army National Guard posts. There are already soldiers working and training in the city, but over the next few years, a building will be provided and more units will be stationed in Palm Coast.or the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs, who, not only got to take pictures with soldiers on military vehicles, but beat the First Coast Buccaneers 7-2 Friday, April 3, at FPC.

The Bulldogs welcomed four soldiers, staff sergeants Jay Diaz and Glenn Wade, and private first class’ Alex Stavoy and Scott Martin, from Palm Coast’s new National Guard Armory, who were honored before the game, given jerseys and hats and threw out the honorary first pitch in uncommon fashion. Wade low crawled up the pitcher’s mound and then pretended to throw a grenade at the catcher (described by Diaz).

“It’s always awesome that we get to work with the National Guard to do Military Night every year,” coach Jordan Butler said. “I was kind of disappointed with the turnout, seeing we were donating all the proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Foundation, but anytime you can do anything for those people who are giving their lives and making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, I think this is a big way to say thank you.”

After the opening ceremonies, FPC went down in the top of the first inning, when First Coast scored on a sacrifice fly in the outfield. The Bulldogs quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, when Sam Colasanti scored from second on a single.

Both teams remained equal through after three innings, and then FPC scored six runs in the fourth on a number of players getting walked, hit, and one or two got singles to drive runners in. FPC was able to hold the Buccaneers scoreless until the seventh, when they could only muster a run before losing. Although FPC won, Butler was far from impressed with his team.

“It’s always good to get to win,” coach Jordan Butler said. “There are four outcomes to a game. You can play well and win, and you can play well and lose. You can play bad and win, and you can play bad and lose. We’ll take three out of four. I felt like we didn’t play the way we normally do, but we were able to get the win.”

Austin Massabeau went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Nik Bitner, Kenny Lewis and Josh Alvarado’s only hits all sent runners home.

Up next for the Bulldogs are the Seabreeze Sandcrabs Tuesday, April 7, at FPC.
