Matanzas Woods Parkway over Interstate 95 will shut down for interchange construction just after the end of this school year and reopen one or two weeks before the next school year starts.
The entire interchange project will take longer: a total of about 16-18 months, Palm Coast City Manager Jim Landon told School Board members at a School Board workshop April 7.
The dates are tentative, he said.
“They plan to close it the day after school closes this year, and then the game plan is to open a week or two before school opens,” he said. “Right now we’re hoping it will not impact the transportation system to the high school.”
The project is funded with a Florida Department of Transportation grant and managed by Flagler County.
Two other construction projects will also affect the school, Landon said: the extension of Old Kings Road, and the extension of Palm Harbor Parkway.
The construction on Old Kings Road will avoid the sharp turn at Forest Grove Drive, which will become a neighborhood street. Old Kings Road will continue north to a three-way intersection at Matanzas Woods Parkway and Palm Harbor Parkway, where there will be a traffic signal. Eventually, in a later project, Old Kings Road will be continued to the north.
With the new project, Landon said, students and parents would drive to the school on Old Kings Road, and school bus traffic would use Matanzas Woods Parkway.
The current stretch of Old Kings Road, running between Forest Grove Drive and Matanzas High School, would become a school entrance street and take a new name related to the school, such as Pirate Way or Pirate Lane, Landon said.
