The Matanzas sports program had a big week. First, the lacrosse team wins the district championship for the first time in its history, and the next day both the girls and boys track teams finished district runner-ups.
“It would have been nice to bring home one of the first-place trophies, but I’m very proud of my kids,” coach Jeremy Schaefer said. “All in all, seeing we brought home two trophies, we had a good day.”
The Pirates had numerous top-place finishers in both girls’ and boys’ competitions, and others placed in the Top 4, enough to qualify for the regional meet.
For the girls, Kinley Drummonds and Miracle Porter took first and third in high jump, and Savannah and Kinley Drummonds got first and second in the pole vault. Lexi Krenz and Kayla Short took first and second in the shot put and first and fourth in the discus throw. Kylie Dahlberg finished second in the 800 meter run, and the 4x100 meter relay took third place.
In boys’ competition, John Guilbe, Eddie Hidalgo and Daniel Ramirez took the top three places in the pole vault, and Jawanza Griffith and Michael Mohamed got first and fourth in the discus throw. River Marti got third in the 800 meter run, Anthony Colasanti took fourth in the 1600 meter run, and David Perez finished third in the 3200 meter run. Jeffrey Simon got third in the 110 meter hurdles, and 4x400 meter relay took second.
Tahiem Shakir, who won the high jump with a school record 6 feet 4 inches, said about his win, “I was a little nervous going into it, but my coach told me to assure my place at regionals. I didn’t get 6 feet 4 inches, but I pulled through my self-doubt.”
“It felt good to win my competition, but it felt even better to get district runner-up, because I care more about my team than I care about individual results,” he added. “I am so proud of my team, and have love for every one of them.”
Matanzas’ regional track meet will kick off April 22, at Harmony High School in St. Cloud.
