Flagler Horseshoe Pitching Club’s treasurer Tom Martone put in a bid, two years ago, for his club to host the 2015 Florida Horseshoe State Tournament, and this past week, he saw it come to fruition. Nearly 300 horseshoe pitchers and their families journeyed to the 18-court facility in hopes to leave with a state championship from Wednesday through Saturday, April 22-25, in Bunnell.
“We’ve been preparing for this event since winning the bid,” Martone said. “This event generated a lot of revenue for Flagler County. They ate at our restaurants and stayed in the hotels. We are one of the most organized and best clubs in the county, so I’m thankful for the coverage.”
The tournament’s host location was the Hilton Garden Inn, where they held a cocktail party and a dinner banquet to conclude the four-day festivities.
The Club’s next big event will be a three-day annual, rivalry competition against one of the Georgia’s top horseshoe clubs. They will be bringing 35-40 pitchers, along with their families, to the county.
“I call the event the ‘Bragger’s Right Tournament,’” Martone said. “When Georgia wins, we’re supposed to go up there to try to win the trophy back, because it’s a large trophy. Last year, they won, so we were supposed to visit them, but they told us that they wanted to come here because they liked it here so much.” The Horseshoe Club has already become one of the most successful clubs in the state.
The pitching courts support local club leagues and hosts statewide tournaments used by both club members and non-members, and it is open to the general public for anyone who wishes to play or practice. For those interested in joining the club or wanting to more information, call 447-3559.
