Flagler County Commissioners have voted 4-1, against a proposal to replace county janitorial staff with a private firm, American Janitorial Services, Inc. Commissioner Nate McLaughlin voted in favor of hiring the firm.
If the commission had approved the privatization of county janitorial services, 13 individuals currently employed in the department, would have lost their jobs.
Those 13 would have received separation packages beginning at two months pay, and four months health insurance. It would be the insurance, or the lack of insurance, provided by the bidding company, that would be their down fall in being awarded the contract.
Jordan Dailey, representing American Janitorial, Inc., assured the commission that current employees would all have the opportunity to interview for a position with their company, for jobs that pay $10 an hour, the county starts janitorial pay at $9.47 an hour.
When asked if benefits, specifically, health insurance would be comparable to what the employees received now, Dailey said his company does not offer benefits.
