Early on Monday morning, new high security jail cells were prepared for transit to Flagler County’s new county jail. The new county jail is scheduled to be in full operation by June 2016.
Sixty new units in all will be installed within this week, at an average of 12 cells a day. Each cell can hold two to four inmates. The new county jail will be at the same location as the old jail, at 1001 Justice Lane, Bunnell.
“As our county grows crime is always an issue,” said Jim Troiano, of the Flagler County Sherriff’s Office. “We are taking care of the issue of overcrowding appropriately. ... With this new jail we will be able to accommodate any level of classification.”
The new structure will raise the number of possible incarcerated inmates from 132 to 402.
The method of using prebuilt cells to build the new jail is considered more cost effective than building them on the site. The cells are prebuilt in Atlanta, then laid into the structure much like buiding with LEGOs.
The construction of the new county jail will cost approximately $17.9 million.
