At a workshop on Thursday, Aug. 6, Flagler Beach city commissioners took their first steps toward finding a new city manager. The current city manager, Bruce Campbell, has given his notice, effective Sept. 20.
Campbell was asked to leave the chambers during the discussion.
This was not the first time Campbell has given notice since he has been manager. In the past, the commission has convinced Campbell to stay. This time they didn't.
Commission Joy McGrew said it would be difficult to replace him.
“I think he is good for the city,” she said.
While the others did not disagree, they thought it was time to let Campbell go.
“I don't think he's not good for us, but I don't think you give a third chance,” said Commissioner Jane Mealy. “It's nothing against Bruce at all.”
It was decided, to first advertise the job to staff. If qualified candidates are found internally, the commission will have a special meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20 to discuss the applicants.
The position pays from $70,000 to $90,000 annually, plus benefits. The manager is required to reside in Flagler Beach.
The Commission was concerned about the task before them – finding a candidate who has experience in a small coastal community, and is willing to, “wear multiple hats,” including heading up the CRA.
“The resumes we got the last time, approximately 60-percent had experience in CRAs,” Commissioner Steve Settle said.
The position will be advertised to city employees for five business days, beginning Aug. 10. After that, a broader search will be conducted.
If a qualified candidate is not found prior to Campbell's departure, an acting manager will be appointed, until a new manager is hired.
