Get to know this year’s trends from the fashion experts at Zulily.
With the school year starting in less than a week, parents and kids have been busy getting their closets ready for ‘A+’ style. Fashion buyers and experts at Zulily, an online retailer focused on helping people discover special finds every day, noticed a trend in what their vendors are selling, what consumers are buying and what their own kids want to wear. After examining the top kids clothing and accessory purchases, Zulily determined the following trends were the most popular in Florida:
Overall top items bought in Florida from decades include:
Zulily’s Kid Fashion Expert Shawn Anderson said the resurgence of the 1970s look is partly due to the fashion tendency to revive old trends and the popularity of musical festivals.
“Speaking as a parent, I think we all like to see our children wearing pieces inspired from our own youth,” Anderson said, “and the ‘boho chic’ styles of the 70s are no stranger to this inspiration. The 70s retro fashion trend has made an epic resurgence and is visible everywhere from couture fashion runways all the way to kids apparel. Seventies clothing encourages a free-spirited expression of individuality, constructed in comfortable styles and fabrics which are easy for everyone to embrace.”
He said more fashion revival from previous decades has had trends from the 1980s and 1990s coming back in some very unique ways.
“We’ve noticed the 80s trend taking an interesting twist by highlighting two very distinct personalities,” he said. “The first, being the ‘preppy-classic’ style featuring peacoats, polos, tailored blazers and vests, knee high socks, button down blouses, and preppy sweaters. The second, is reminiscent of Will Smith on
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” emphasizing a more hip-hop inspired personality. Common staples of this style icon are bright and graphic prints, often being mixed and matched, with acid and light wash denim, and joggers. We are also noticing a nod to the ‘a la grunge’ street looks of the 90s. Aligning with this decade, we are seeing a quirky mix of patterns and styling, and a definite popularity of plaid – by pairing this in the form of flannel with a vintage music tee kiddos are once again hip to the 90s vibe.”
When it comes to different age groups, Anderson said the trends vary depending on the maturity of the kid.
“The younger kids in elementary school are wearing just a touch of it,” he said. “They lean towards choosing 70s inspired prints on their clothing or picking out a vintage inspired graphic tee. If we look at the middle-schoolers they are more apt to wear the trend. For instance, they love to choose a wide leg jean and pair it with a floral bell-sleeve top. Finally, the ones in high school are not afraid to take the trend head on and incorporate it head-to-toe. They are the ones more inclined to wear a beaded or crocheted head wrap, a floral kimono style top, denim cut offs, or even fringe on their boots.”
