The United Way Women’s Initiative sold out its seventh-annual Power of the Purse event Aug. 31, with over 190 guests. This year, the event had a black-and-white masquerade theme.
The Power of the Purse raises funds every year to help feed and shelter local women and children in need. United Way’s mission is to “Create long-term change in the lives of women and children by focusing on root causes and pooling together resources to increase the impact.” With the collaborative effort of many organizations, the United Way Women’s Initiative will be able to continuously support those in need.
“This being my last year as president of the Volusia and Flagler County United Way Woman’s Initiative, I am very pleased with the turnout of this event and all the wonderful community support,” Event Coordinator Jamie Brown said.
Many of the funds raised will go to support Flagler County programs through grants such as local food pantries, free health clinics and education programs. This year, a book drop was set in place at the Power of the Purse event to help fund the Reading Pals in Flagler County program. This organization connects passionate volunteers with preschoolers who need a little extra help in reading.
