Donald O'Brien, a local business owner and former Flagler Chamber president, has announced that he will run for the Flagler County Commission District 5 seat in the upcoming 2016 elections.

O'Brien, who recently graduated from the Chamber's Flagler Public Leadership Institute, has filed to run as a Republican.

The District 5 seat is now held by by George Hanns, a Democrat who was first elected to the commission in 1992 and is the county's longest-serving commissioner.

O'Brien has been a Flagler resident since 1990 and is the co-owner and chief financial officer of Hayward Brown-Flagler Insurance. He ran for the Florida House in 2012, but withdrew from the race.

O'Brien told the Palm Coast Observer in a previous interview in May that he would run, but only if Hanns decided not to run for re-election.

Hanns said at the time that he would make that decision in January, but told local online news source FlaglerLive.com in late October that he has decided to run again.

O'Brien is so far the only one to have formally filed with the Elections Office as a candidate for the County Commission District 5 race.
