The unbeatens (as of Dec. 8)
FPC girls basketball (8-0)
Coming off of their deepest postseason run, the Final Four contenders seem hungrier. The Lady Bulldogs have revamped their roster, after losing star player Armani Walker, and are charging for a return to Lakeland, headed by senior Tamara Henshaw. One of their latest wins, over Potter’s House, came on by four points, but they have handled everyone else easily, including a 62-47 win over, then, an undefeated Father Lopez.
The Lady Dawgs will play Lafayette and Ferguson this weekend in the Andy Hart Memorial Tournament in Mayo.
Matanzas soccer (7-0)
The Pirates have spread the wealth around this season. Excluding the goalie, everyone on the team has either scored a goal or assisted on a goal. Matanzas is averaging five goals per contest while assisting on nearly as many made shots. Senior Dakotah Casale leads the Pirates in goals (11) and assists (7), and sophomore Steven Grange follows with six goals and five assists.
The Pirates will look to keep their streak alive, when they play Clay Friday, Dec. 11, at Matanzas.
FPC boys basketball (6-0)
FPC lost a number of seniors this past season, but the Bulldogs got senior Nysean Giddens, who is averaging 18 points per game, back from injury and other key contributors who have helped keep the Dawgs undefeated. After winning their district last year, the FPC came up short of a Final Four appearance. With Giddens back in healthy form, FPC is already headed in that direction.
The Bulldogs play Mandarin Friday, Dec. 12, at FPC.
Matanzas wrestling (4-0)
The Pirates kicked off their season this past week with victories over Satellite (39-24), Creekside (45-30), Bartram Trail (41-30) and Bradford (Bradford).
Tristan Kraus, Carter Goodman, Eddy Leon de la Cruz, Rocky Samples, Maverick Dennis, Jordin Castanheira and Stone White going all went undefeated on the day, winning at least three matches.
Matanzas will now go to the Capital City Classic on Friday, Dec. 11, in Tallahassee.
