Sixth-grade students from Bunnell Elementary made an appointment on Wednesday, Dec. 2, to present their ideas for improving the emergency department to the leadership at Florida Hospital Flagler.

“The ideas were especially valuable because they came from a child’s perspective!” Robert Davis, Florida Hospital Flagler chief nursing officer

The five students, Christina Courson, Karissa Jackson, Isabella Miller, Hope Romaine and Carmella Sweeney are members of the Bunnell Problem Solvers.

“Students involved in community problem solving develop lifelong skills including creating solutions for needs in the community, working with local entities, and inspiring change,“ said Jennifer Colindres, Bunnell Elementary School sixth grade certified gifted teacher. “The implementation of real solutions gives students a strong sense of accomplishment and helps them to see the practical applications of the processes and skills that they have been learning.”

Their ideas included pediatric-themed patient rooms, education programs to prepare families for emergency room visits, and how to make the emergency department more child-friendly.

“The Florida Hospital Flagler team really enjoyed hearing the student’s ideas about creating a more child-friendly atmosphere in our emergency department. The ideas were especially valuable because they came from a child’s perspective! The young ladies were exceptionally professional and well-spoken and we will certainly be considering the feasibility of some of the ideas presented to us,” said Robert Davis, Florida Hospital Flagler chief nursing officer.

Christmas angels needed

Flagler Christmas Angels needs local support to fill student’s clothing wish lists. The Flagler County Christmas Angels will be helping to fill stockings this year for hundreds of Flagler children whose parents are struggling and need help making their Christmas.

While the need is for toys, greater still, because it’s harder to fill, is the need for clothing. More than 230 students have put clothing on their wish lists, and the registrations are far from over.

“It is those kids primarily that we need sponsors for,” said Katrina Townsend, director of student services, Flagler County Public Schools. “If you can sponsor a child for $30, or make any donation to this project, you can make a Christmas wish come true!”

“The need is great for donations or gift drops for clothing,” said Dorothy Kelly, a local real estate agent. “It’s profound to see wish lists from children who aren’t asking for toys, but clothes. It’s so easy in a group effort to come up with $30, and it will be the difference between a present under the tree and providing clothing needs, or not, for so many of these students. Sadly, it’s the teens and the clothing needs that don’t all get met when Christmas giving is distributed.”
