“Seabreeze is always a big win for us. A lot of the boys that play basketball also play football, and a lot of the girls on the teams are managers for football. And, they all grew up together, so it’s always going to be a rivalry.” Arthur Westbrook, Mainland girls’ basketball coach
The crosstown rival schools, Seabreeze and Mainland, saved the closest game and most entertaining for last on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Seabreeze.
Seabreeze hung on at the end to take Mainland down 60-48. After trailing early in the game, the Sandcrabs begin to knock down shots and force turnovers, which led to a 22-6 run through halftime. After a Mainland run of its own to pull within six points late in the fourth quarter, the ‘Crabs made enough buckets and free throws to hang on for their third win in the week.
“I knew we could play at a high level, but it depends on how they want to play,” Seabreeze coach Pepper Johnson said. “If they listen to us coaches, we’ll be successful.”
To begin the day, Mainland’s junior varsity girls and boys beat the Sandcrabs in early games, the varsity Lady Bucs routed the Lady ‘Crabs 67-37. Mainland never trailed, and their forced turnovers allowed them to cruise in the second half.
“This was an important win, because lost both big games against Deltona and Flagler, but I told my girls we had to learn how to lose but come back, and they did it today,” Coach Arthur Westbrook said.
