There are some nights when everything goes right for a team, and that night occurred for the Seabreeze Lady Sandcrabs (15-2-2, 11-0-1), as they ran away from rivals Mainland 7-0 on senior night Friday, Dec. 18, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
“It was a fabulous game for the seniors,” Merkel said. “It was their night; they felt special, which is what senior night is supposed to be about. The team came together and really made it all about their seniors.”
The first two goals of the game came by way of passes. Sophomore Alauna Neely’s cross snuck past the goal keeper, and Madison Politis’ free kick seemed like a high pass that trailed over the goal keeper’s head.
Elizabeth Murray converted the penalty kick won by senior Sarah Myers, who was brought down in the box, and senior Myers netted the fourth goal. Politis found Abby Gabriel to make it 5-0, and then she assisted Murray to go up 6-0 at the break.
Politis ended up with three assists on the night, and Neely and Murray also helped on goals.
“The things we’ve accomplished is understanding one another, trusting each other, and the things we want to work on is our finishing. We have beautiful crosses all day long, and, if we can capitalize on those beautiful crosses, I feel this team will go deep into the playoffs.”
Both teams will enjoy the Christmas and New Year break and return to action Tuesday, Jan. 5. Seabreeze will get its rematch with Flagler Palm Coast, and Mainland will play at Father Lopez.
