A 52-year-old Bunnell man was home eating pizza late at night when someone in a pickup truck pulled up in front of his Tangerine Avenue home and fired a gun toward him after he came onto his porch, the man told deputies.
The incident was one of two on Dec. 16 linked to a group of suspects who appeared to have targeted homes because of teenagers who lived there, according to Flagler County Sheriff's Office case reports.
The victim on Tangerine Avenue, David Burley, got home to his trailer at about 1:54 a.m. Dec. 26 and had just sat down to eat when a pickup truck with a loud exhaust and no license plate pulled up in front of the home, and the driver revved the engine. Burley went out to his porch and asked its occupants what they wanted, but the truck took off, he later told a deputy.
He couldn't see their faces and had trouble hearing what they'd said.
But later, the same truck came back again, and then a third time. As Burley walked inside after the truck made its third pass, he heard five or six gunshots, "with a round striking approximately a foot away from (Burley's) head going through the outer wall of the trailer," according to the deputy's report.
Sheriff's Office deputies found the round embedded in an interior wall, according to the report. A 9mm shell casing was found.
Burley gave a statement, as did a teenager who lived at the house. The teen noted that a group of people had recently "attempted to get him to meet them so that they could jump him," according to the deputy's report.
The deputy noted in the report that the incident on Tangerine Avenue happened soon after a shots fired call from Lime Avenue, several blocks away — an incident with the same group of suspects.
In the Lime Avenue case, which was called in at about 12:16 a.m. Dec. 26, it turned out that suspects had taken a baseball bat or something similar to a local's Hyundai minivan, shattering the rear window.
A teenager in that household had also been contacted by a group of individuals who'd tried to get him to meet up with them, according to the deputy's case report, and witnesses also reported hearing a loud pickup truck.
