Deputies are investigating a shooting that left an 18-year-old with an AK-47 gunshot wound to the neck Tuesday afternoon.

The rifle was a semiautomatic version of the famous fully-automatic AK-47 military assault rifle, and is legal for civiillans to own without special registration, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said Wednesday morning.

Deputies responded to a call about a shooting at 364 Parkview Drive in Palm Coast — just across the street from Wadsworth Elementary School — just after 4 p.m. Feb. 3. They found 18-year-old Shane Huber  "conscious and alert,"  but bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the neck, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

Rescuers used the county's emergency services helicopter, Fire Flight, to airlift Huber to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. His condition was not known at the time the Sheriff's Office sent out the news release.

Detectives investigating the shooting reported that Huber was showing his Romania .762x39mm AK-47 rifle to his friend Brandon Williamson, also 18, when Williamson — thinking the gun was not loaded — pulled the trigger, shooting Huber.

There was no one else at the home when the shooting happened, and detectives believe it was accidental, according to the news release. They have not filed any charges.

Deputies have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
