Matanzas wins conference tournament

The Matanzas Pirates wrestling team won its St. John’s River Conference for the second time in its history Saturday, Feb. 7, at Matanzas.

The Pirates ousted Orange Park (162.50), Fleming Island (155), Middleburg (128), Bartram Trail (69), Nease (63), Palatka (58), St. Augustine (50) and Pedro Menendez (28) with 191 points. Rocky Samples, Troy Magnuson and Jordin Castanheira all won individual titles. Magnuson avenged a loss in the finals, beating Keath Sawdo of Middleburg 3-0. Castanheira beat all his opponents by pinfall throughout the tournament.

Carter Goodman, Andrew Klopman, Tristan Kraus and Eddy Leon de la Cruz all finished in second place, and Nathan Pooler, Chris Mixan, Maverick Dennis, Brandon Autry, Nick Kubiet and Bailey Sattar finished fourth.

FPC wins conference tournament

The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs continued their streak of dominance in the wrestling world, winning their second straight Five Star Conference Championship Saturday, Feb. 7, at FPC.

Winning the conference was never in doubt for the Bulldogs, as they won 10 of the 12 championship matches while placing in the other two. FPC finished with a 241 score, 111 points over second-place DeLand.

The First-place winners were: Zac Branning, Avery Holder, Alfred Shavers, Michael DeAugustino, Evyn Insalaco, Tariq Johnson, Kaz Maia, Eric Rosso, Jake Trivett and Jakob Dempsey. Shavers, Trivett, Maia, Rosso and Insalaco all repeated as championship winners. Steve Candidate and Jonathan Muniz finished in second place in their divisions.

Eagle shot

Jim Miller scored an eagle shot on Palm Harbor's 452-yard Par 5 on the third hole on Wednesday, Jan. 28, during the Palm Harbor Men's Golf Association weekly tournament. Miller used 3-wood, 6-iron, and 7-iron from 125 yds. Playing partners were Roy Lane, Ray Good, and Jim Lewis.
