After a 71-18 season-opening win against Pedro Menendez, the Flagler Palm Coast weightlifting team placed third its meet against winners Spruce Creek, New Smyrna Beach (second) and Seabreeze Thursday, Feb. 19, at FPC.

FPC’s Matt Gartner tied Binaire Michel's eight-year clean & jerk school record of 300 pounds and benched 295 pounds.

“I had my eyes set on that record ever since I started weightlifting for the school in ninth grade, and it feels good knowing that all my hard work is starting to pay off,” Gartner said. “I just have to come back and actually break it now.

"Tying it isn't enough for me, and it's also pretty cool because it's one of the longest standing records at FPC, so I want to break it and set it to where people after me are going to have a hard time breaking it.”

Gartner will get his shot when the Bulldogs welcome University and Warner Christian Thursday, Feb. 26, at FPC.
