The nation’s 10th-ranked Lady Bulldogs (18-3-2) only needed a little over a 10-minute span in the first half to score enough goals to win a third straight District 2-5A championship, over the Spruce Creek Lady Hawks Friday, Jan. 16, at FPC High School.
After yielding an early goal to the Hawks, Annabella Giuliano put the Bulldogs on the board to tie the game in the 15th minute. Just minutes later, Amanda Raleigh brought the crowd to its feet, by nailing a high shot outside the goalie box for the go-ahead score. Julia Lombardo extended FPC’s lead with the final goal of the game to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 win. With that win, the Bulldogs finished district play with seven wins and a tie, but no losses.
On going down early in the game, senior Christen Barney said, “We knew we needed to step it up right then, and that goal fired us up. Coach (Peter) Hald challenged us before the game to not let them score, but if they did, to not let it happen again, so that’s what was in our mind.”
FPC will take its eight-match winning streak into the regional tournament, as the Bulldogs will play the Bucholz Bobcats in the opening regional round at 7 p.m. Thursday, at FPC High School.
“We are ready,” Barney added. “We want nothing more than to keep winning and make it to the end, and we are ready to work hard.”
