Phone scammers impersonating Sheriff's deputies

The following is an adapted news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office:

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports about telephone scammers impersonating Sheriff's Office deputies.

Residents have reported receiving phone calls from a male caller claiming to be a captain or lieutenant with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division.

The scammer tells the person who answers the phone that there is an active warrant for their arrest, and says the victim must pay a $1,000 fine.

In one case, the caller told the complainant to get two $500 prepaid credit cards to give to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office does not ask for payment over the phone.

The Sheriff's Office has advised anyone who receives such a phone call not to give any personal information over the phone and not to send money, gift cards, cashier’s checks or prepaid cards.

Instead, people who receive such a call should contact the Sheriff’s Office or their local law enforcement agency immediately and provide as much information as possible about the call, including the caller’s phone number.

The Sheriff's Office has asked information about with information about this incident or any crime that may have occurred in Flagler County to call the Flagler County Sheriff’s Investigative Services Division at 386-586-4801, or to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-8477. Crime Stoppers tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
