Boat thief can’t start boat, swims off with it
7:01 p.m. — First block of Palm Coast Resort Boulevard, Palm Coast
Larceny in progress: A 55-year-old marina resident was at the local marina when he saw an unfamiliar man grab a fellow marina resident’s dinghy and try to start its motor. That didn’t work, and the thief began paddling it. Then the thief jumped into the water and pulled the boat along behind him from its bowline. The witness ran into the store and told the dinghy’s owner that someone was stealing his tender. Another boater also saw the theft and followed the thief as he swam off with the dinghy: the thief had turned north on the Intracoastal and left the boat on the shore around the corner, then fled on foot, he said. The boater tugged the dinghy back to the marina. The starter cord was broken: The thief had tried to start it by yanking it, and had instead snapped it. Deputies investigating the case couldn’t find the thief.
