The following is a press release from Flagler County:
According to Flagler County authorities an afternoon wildfire has been contained near the Eagle Rock gated community. Two homes had to be evacuated.
Smoke is causing visibility problems for motorists on U.S. 1.
“There is very low visibility,” Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said. “It’s burning near the houses and two had to be evacuated.”
The fire started shortly after 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, and is currently covering a little more than three acres.
The Florida Forest Service is helping Flagler County firefighters contain the fire.
Flagler County Emergency Management, Road and Bridge and the Department of Transportation are currently placing signs on U.S. 1 both north and south of the fire, which is burning just north of the Volusia County line.
“If the smoke gets worse, we’ll ask for the roadway to be closed,” Petito said.
Motorists are advised to take alternate routes if possible. Low-lying dense smoke and patchy fog could be a problem overnight and early morning.
