Wheels rolling into Waterfront Park in Palm Coast at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, July 25, signified the start of the dedication ceremony for the two newest feathered friends.
The bronze sculptures were created by artists Vadim Volnov, Wes Cackler and Anthony Gargiulo. Cackler was present for the dedication.
A ground plaque in front of one of the birds bore the names of 41 soldiers, 16 killed and 25 seriously wounded in Grafenwoehr, Germany in 1960 in a Cold War-era artillery accident..
The soldiers were comrades of Frank Gargiulo who was visiting from Connecticut to participate in the dedication.
The event was the first stop for the annual Tour de Palm Coast, led by Bill Butler, Landscape Architect for the City of Palm Coast, with Palm Coast City Councilman Bill McGuire riding the last bike. Mayor Jon Netts had planned on speaking but was unable to attend due to a medical issue.
