Jason Wheeler isn't in the right desk yet; he's downstairs until offices can be rearranged. He has nothing on his calendar yet because his boss — Superintendent Jacob Oliva — is out of the office for a few days. But he is preparing to make a big impact on how you get information about Flagler Schools.
Wheeler was recently hired as the information specialist for the district. He formerly covered Flagler County for Central Florida News 13 as a multimedia journalist. He said he wasn't looking for a career change, but the district approached him and asked him if he'd be interested in taking over the new position.
His vision? "Telling the good stories here," he said.
According to the press release sent by the district, Wheeler will focus on internal and external communication and will provide training to staff on effective and informative communication with media, families and stakeholders. He will serve as the public information officer for Flagler Schools, although they decided against using the term "PIO" as his title because it sounds too distant and clinical.
Wheeler said he looks forward to helping the community to understand the full scope of the Flagship Programs at each school. So far, he said, "it's been trickled out," but he will help to give a "unified approach" to the message.
Lynette Shott, who was recently moved from principal of Flagler Palm Coast High School to become the director of the newly created Community and Student Engagement department, will lead Wheeler's efforts.
She said, in the press release: "As we move forward with our commitment to community and student engagement, Jason will be a great asset. His expertise and passion for Flagler County and our school district will help us continue to improve our partnership with our families and community as we all work together to help every student reach their full potential."
