The Salvation Army opened their new office, at 703 E. Moody Blvd., to the public on Friday, July 31. This is the first, full-time, office to be opened by the organization in Flagler County.
"People kept telling us, 'If you are going to do the kind of work that you do, you need to be in Bunnell,'" said Tony Deobil, director of social services.
As residents, ministers, representatives from other organizations, and the public stepped into the waiting room, the reaction was the same – “inviting and relaxing.”
“This is so inviting,” was the most heard phrase as tours were provided throughout the facility. Debbie Colbert of the Salvation Army, was in charge of decorating the new offices and created a homey atmosphere as opposed to a bureaucratic office.
Pastel paint, decorator pillows, stylish seating and a play area in the corner for the children made it a place where those seeking help can feel comfortable.
“We are celebrating the opening of this office in Flagler County, and also celebrating 150 years of the Salvation Army,” said Pamela Andrews, AmeriCorps,VISTA, Volusia County Coalition for the Homeless, Clothing/Donation Chair at FCFAC and The Sheltering Tree representative said.
Andrews said she is involved in all of the organizations to become as educated as possible in the different areas. Something residents will benefit from as she operates out of the new office.
“It's a real blessing to be able to be here,” she said.
The organization provides help to those in need.
“We are open five days a week and will have a food pantry on-site,” said Joni Casillas, director of development. “People can walk in and find out how to get help paying the light bill or help with their mortgage or rent. It's a one stop kind of place.”
The location in the heart of Bunnell, across from the post office, was intentional.
"People kept telling us, 'If you are going to do the kind of work that you do, you need to be in Bunnell,'" said Tony Deobil, director of social services. “We looked around and this was affordable and accessible.”
Funding is being provided through at $3 million dollar VA grant through Supportive Services for Veteran Families.
As he cited Mathew 10:42, during his blessing, Major Stan Colbert, pastor and corps officer, said the 'giving of a cup of cold water,' was what the new office would provide.
“This is our cup of cold water,” Colbert said. “We are privileged to be able to do God's work here.”
