Mark Richter — the man recently in the news for sending the press an email containing an image of Osama bin Laden having sex with a camel, with a subject line calling for the boycott of online news service FlaglerLive.com, whose editor is Lebanese-American — has filed as a Republican candidate for the Flagler County Commission District 1 race.

Richter ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Commissioner Nate McLaughlin in the District 4 race last year, losing that seat by 237 votes.

The Flagler County Commission District 1 seat is currently held by Commissioner Charlie Ericksen, a Republican. Richter is the first candidate to register for any of the upcoming County Commission races.

After Richter’s unsuccessful County Commission bid last year, he was in the news for sending county commissioners and local reporters an email implying that Pierre Tristam, the FlaglerLive editor, should be treated as a potential terrorist threat and restricted from the Government Services Building because Tristam had years ago changed his name, which had previously been Pierre Fouad Haddad.

The primary election is Aug. 30, 2016.
