Deputies arrested a naked male prostitute on a felony battery charge and several misdemeanor charges June 17 after his client, a Woodlawn Drive resident, called the Sheriff’s Office and said the prostitute was trying to kill him.
Deputies who arrived at the home found the suspect, 42-year-old Fernandina Beach resident Charles William Hines, combative and unclothed. When he refused to get dressed, they dragged him out of the house fighting and nude as a crowd on onlookers gathered on the street.
The victim, a 69-year-old, had called the Sheriff’s Office at about 6:52 p.m. June 17, telling dispatch “that the suspect was ‘very strong’ and ‘psychotic,’ and that he held him down against his will while on his bed,” according to a Sheriff’s Office charging affidavit filled out by Deputy George Hristakopoulos.
The victim later told deputies who arrested Hines that he’d paid Hines $200 for one hour of sex, but that Hines had stayed for four hours, against the victim’s will. The victim said he’d asked Hines to leave multiple times, and that Hines sexually battered him and threw his phone across the room when he tried to use it. The victim, showing deputies red marks on his throat, said Hines choked him.
When Hristakopoulos and another deputy arrived at the house, the victim got out through the garage and gave them permission to enter the home to remove Hines, who the two deputies found lying “completely unclothed” and seemingly intoxicated on a bed, according to the affidavit.
Hristakopoulos told Hines multiple times to get dressed and speak with him, but Hines refused, “and began on several occasions yelling loudly and throwing things around the bedroom.” So Hristakopoulos took out his Taser and pointed it at Hines’ torso, and told him to place his hands behind his back and leave the room. Hines “refused to cooperate,” Hristakopoulos wrote, “ and I physically pushed him out of the bedroom, where Deputy Crosbee successfully placed him in handcuffs.”
The deputies then “physically escorted” Hines into the front yard, where he saw the victim and “began screaming, cursing, and pulling away.” The deputies didn’t use force or their Tasers against Hines while he struggled and screamed — saying, among other things, “I’ll kill everyone in jail” — for six minutes, according to the affidavit. Meanwhile, onlookers gathered on the street, and one person called 911 at about 7:14 p.m. “due to the scene that Mr. Hines was creating within the otherwise quiet residential community.”
Deputies charged Hines with battery on a person over 65, tampering with a witness, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence. Neither Hines nor the victim were charged with any prostitution-related crimes. Hines had been released from the county jail on a combined $6,500 bond as of the afternoon of June 19.
