In the next chapter of one of the most contentious issues in the city, City Manager Jim Landon said today that the number of red light cameras will be reduced from 43 to five in Palm Coast. Under the City Council's direction, he negotiated with American Traffic Solutions this week, and the Arizona-based camera provider agreed to eliminate 38 cameras.
Landon said there is still no final deal to present to the City Council to actually sign, although he will give an update at the March 10 workshop. Because there is no deal just yet, there is no telling how long it will take before cameras are officially taken down, but his best guess was that it could be within 30 days.
The City Council directed Landon to also ask ATS to shorten the remaining years on the contract from four to two, and to agree to let the city keep its $700-per-camera-per-month deal, as city employees take over the responsibility of reviewing each violation to determine whether a citation should be mailed out. Those issues have not been sorted out yet, Landon said.
