Braeden Kopec competes in Costa Rica
Flagler Beach surfer Braeden Kopec, 8, has returned from competing in his first international surfing contest, which was held in Costa Rica.
After advancing through several elimination rounds in two different divisions, Kopec finished third place in the 16Uage division. He also finished fifth in the 12U.
“I was so excited to surf a contest in another country against the locals who surf those waves every day,” Kopec said “There are some really, really good surfers in Costa Rica and it was so cool to be able to compete with them. Everyone was really nice at the contest, and we all became friends. It’s awesome to make friends in different countries.”
Kopec finished his 2014-15 Eastern Surfing Association district season in first place overall for 12U Menehune shortboard, third overall for 14U Menehune longboard and first overall for 14U Menehune bodyboard.
Matanzas gets first win in comeback fashion
The Matanzas Lady Pirates jumped into the winning column with a 10-7 comeback win over New Smyrna Beach Thursday, Feb. 26, in New Smyrna. Matanzas trailed by four runs in the sixth but recovered by a key New Smyrna error in the eighth inning to pull out the win.
The Pirates got two three-run rallies in the sixth and eighth innings. Brooklyn Jimeson went 2-for-5, and Cami Leake went 2-for-4 and two RBIs. Savannah Drummonds went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Jimeson had two extra-base hits, doubling in the fourth and tripling in the seventh inning. She also struck out seven batters.
FPC softball gets first win over rivals
The Lady Bulldogs celebrated their first win of the season with an 11-0 shutout over crosstown rivals Matanzas Friday Feb. 27, at Matanzas. Jessica Hayes went a perfect 4-4 with 2 RBIs, Autumn Holmes went 3-3 with a double and an RBI, and CC Smith went 3-5 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base. Vicky Conner was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts.
Matanzas wins by 16 in lacrosse
The Matanzas Pirates thrashed Providence 23-7 for their third win of the season Thursday, Feb. 26, at Matanzas.
James Mayer 4 goals and Jake Cohill each had four goals, and Gunner Parson scored twice while assisting on four others. Storm Schalit also scored twice and assisted on five goals, and Andrew McIntire put in three goals.
Zach Smith gets hole-in-one
Zachary Smith recorded a hole-in-one on the second hole Friday, Feb. 20, at the Pine Lakes Golf Course.
Flagler FAST softball gets winners after season opener
Flagler Fast kicked off its spring softball season with three separate divisions Friday, Feb. 27.
In the 10U division, Mike Durrance’s Lil' Spitfire won their game 15-3. Mike Kusek and the Transformer won 10-2 in 14U, and Shannon Gutierrez’s Dirt Devilz won 10-2 in the 15 and older league.
Flagler FAST has also announced that it will have a traveling team, the Flagler Fast Future.
